***ABU AL-GHEIT ENSEMBLE***
The musicians of the Abu al-Gheit Ensemble are sufi (mistical) practitioners from the Delta of the Nile who carry out the zikr and zar traditions. Zikr is a sufi practice based on the repetition of God\’s name, while zar is a healing tradition of African origin that involves music and dance, aiming at reconciling a person with the spirits hosted in his/her body through a state of trance. Both zikr and zar share the same spiritual path and express an important, yet largely unexplored, Egyptian popular tradition.
